The Greek Culture Ministry has announced that Greece’s open-air archaeological sites will be shut between 12 pm and 5 pm from Tuesday, August 3, through Thursday, August 5, due to the extremely high temperatures expected over the next few days.
Greece is currently experiencing a heatwave with record-high temperatures to the end of the week, and the ministry says the shutdown has been imposed for the safety of visitors.

This is the country’s worst heatwave in more than 30 years, as temperatures reached 45°C in some regions on Monday.
The highest temperature registered was 46.3C at Makrakomi in Fthiotis, on the eastern seaboard of mainland Greece. This temperature rating is the highest ever recorded by the observatory in its history.
The weather services forecast temperatures of 40°C to 42°C on the islands and 41°C to 43°C on the mainland for Tuesday, with highs of 44°C to 45°C in the Peloponnese and Thessaly.
In Athens, temperatures will exceed 40°C, with highs of 43°C and lows of 31°C, according to the Greek meteorological services.
Advice to the public, especially for babies, the elderly, and those in vulnerable groups, is to take measures to protect themselves from the heat, to avoid being outdoors during the peak of the day, avoid physical exercise outdoors, and stay hydrated.

Kastellorizo’s beautiful little harbour is lined with charming neoclassical mansions that are two-story and painted in gorgeous shades- making them stand out. The horseshoe-shaped harbour is striking and it’s the first thing you see as you arrive by ferry. In fact, it’s one of the largest harbours in the Eastern Mediterranean. Here you will find wonderful restaurants, bars, shops and Sandrapeia Urban School, whose architecture is inspired by the University of Athens building. Also, look out for the New Market and City Hall buildings that were built during the Italian occupation.

Wander around town
Behind the harbour-front are the town’s narrow backstreets that come to life at night- especially during summer. Although it has a small population (around 490 residents), the one and only town on the island is full of wonderful restaurants, cafes, a few bars and shops that are packed in the warmer months. Here is where you will find most of the hotels, banks, bakeries, and a range of places to eat. It really is a pretty town with lots of places to sit and enjoy the wonderful views.
Climb to Agios Giorgios
There are around five churches dedicated to Agios Giorgios (Saint George) on Kastellorizo island and if you take a walk to the Agios Nikolaos Castle, you will then be able to climb to reach the Monastery of Agios Giorgios tou Vounou (Saint George of the Mountains).
It takes 401 steps (to be exact) to reach it, but the views from here are absolutely worth it. Surrounded by huge stones, this deserted monastery resembles a fortress and hosts a catacomb, among other things. From here you will also be rewarded with panoramic views of the harbour, Mandraki and the Turkish coastline.
Explore the Blue Cave

The Blue Cave of Kastellorizo is famous worldwide and one of the biggest attractions to the island. This cave is said to be among the most impressive natural treasures found in the Mediterranean, as it’s larger than the Grotta Azzurra on Capri in Italy. Swimming in the cave, in the stunning reflected light, is a unique experience as the sunlight reflected at the back of the cave paints the water an incredible shade of Aegean blue, which is mesmerising.

From Kastellorizo, a day trip to the Island of Ro lasts around three hours and you will be able to see an islet that’s very special for Greeks; it’s symbolic importance is thanks to a heroic woman, Despina Achladioti, who lived on the island completely alone for 40 years. What started as a patriotic act of resistance during the Nazi Occupation lasted until she passed away. Every morning Kyria Despina proudly raised the Greek flag on this remote island and took it down every evening as the sunset. Departure from the main harbour of Kastellorizo towards the island of Ro, by speed boat, or a wooden traditional boat allows you to explore the islet and you will can have a quick swim or snorkel along the way.

A visit to Mandraki, the island’s second, more tranquil harbour is also a must. The peaceful, dainty and pretty bay serves as the secondary port of the island. It’s around 700 metres walking distance from the central port and can be reached within 10 minutes on foot. Mandraki is a wonderful place to swim, snorkel, or just sit back and relax with the locals at a cafe.
Learn some local history
A stroll around the older part of town is a great way to learn about the rich local history of the island. Kastello Rosso where the castle, erected by the Knights of Saint John on the russet hill, takes you back to the 14th century. Below the castle is a well preserved Lycian tomb.
Visit a unique church
Also make sure you check out the historic Church of Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni, which features gothic style architecture.
Check out the Archaeological Museum
The wonderful Ancient Museum houses ancient stone anchors, vases, marble statues and other finds dating back to the 4th Century BC. You’ll find a remarkable collection of artefacts from ancient and Byzantine times, as well as local arts and crafts that reveal so much about the traditions of the island. Displays include Byzantine writing tablets, traditional local costumes and a range of folk art. More exhibits can also be found in the old Ottoman mosque which houses the Museum of Folk Art.
Spend a day at the beach
Dive into the crystal clear waters
Don’t expect to find any sandy beaches at Kastellorizo as there is not even one, but don’t let that put you off- as there are so many amazing spots to enjoy unforgettable dips as you dive in from rocky ledges, harbour quays or boats. Some of the most popular places for a swim include a spot next to Agnadi Hotel; in front of the Megisti Hotel at the harbour and, right across, at the Faros Café. And if you take a boat from the harbour you can explore may remote spots- make sure you make your way over to Plakes.
Take a boat tour around the island
A boat ride with a local skipper is the best way to see the hidden places and this way you can swim or go snorkelling at some of the nicest bays of your choice. Boats depart from the main harbour of Kastellorizo and you are able to explore the emerald waters, including the nearby islet of Agios Giorgios. When sailing around you will be able to discover small rocky bays as well as the secret Colones Blue Cave (not the Blue Cave mentioned above).

Kastellorizo is renowned for its seafood dishes and each morning at the harbour, you can watch boats arriving with fresh fish, prawns, sea urchins and octopus that is delivered straight to the local tavernas. The fish is incredible and cooked to perfection. Also try Katoumari a seafood pasta, Souam Dormasi (stuffed onions) and the Vrithopites (chickpea fritters). When it comes to sweets the most unique is the Halvas tis Nifis, which is usually made for special occasions but you can find it all year round.
Eat at great restaurants
There is a great range of eateries to choose from including Alexandra’s for fine dining, Lazarakis for traditional dishes,The Seafood Tavern for fish and Athina for local cuisine. Also add Platania Taverna on Horafia Square, The Olive Garden, The Old Time and Agora to the list- you won’t be disappointed as all these restaurants use local and seasonal produce to create wonderful dishes.
Stay at the best place in town
Mediterraneo Hotel
The finest room for rent on Kastellorizo is the suite at Mediterraneo, a delightful little haven with seven vibrantly coloured bedrooms, some of which look over the harbour and a sunbathing terrace on the quayside. The rooms are spread over two floors and offer lots of light and a nice breeze as they face the sea.
Getting there
Ferries run to Kastellorizo from Rhodes but schedules change seasonally. From Athens, you can travel with Blue Star direct from Piraeus to Kastellorizo and take a cabin. Otherwise, you can fly from Athens to Rhodes and from there you can catch a ferry.
Halki is a beautiful Greek island in the Dodecanese, located about 6 kilometres west of Rhodes. It’s the smallest inhabited island of the Dodecanese (with only 250 permanent residence) however it boasts the most picturesque harbour, which is one of the most beautiful in all of Greece.

You can easily spend hours on end strolling Nimborio’s charming little alleyways, lined with colourful bougainvillaea-decorated mansions, as the absence of cars allows you to really relax, unwind and not have a care about time.
Nimborio is the port and only settlement of the island and the beautiful Venetian style houses are set around a horseshoe-shaped bay. The colourful houses feature pastel shades of mostly pink, salmon and beige. The houses are all similar, with two or three floors and roofs made of ceramic tiles.
The roughly 250 inhabitants are known for their hospitality and friendly nature and make visitors feel right at home. One of the most pleasing things is sitting at one of the local cafes along the harbour and enjoying ouzo, as you play a game of tavli (backgammon) and savour traditional delicacies (make sure you try the locally produced prickly pears and makarounia- handmade pasta).
As you walk along you will discover some of the more than 360 churches, the remnants of a medieval castle and Chorio, the island’s ancient capital, which lies at the foot of the castle.
Bell Tower
Landmarks of the town are the Byzantine bell tower and a dramatic backdrop of rugged mountains guarded by three windmills. Do not miss the church of Agios Nikolaos,(Patron Saint and Protector of the island), built in 1861, with its magnificent bell tower whose base leans over an arch made of ancient marbles. The clock tower stands before the Town Hall, and the building of Hiona Vouvali, once used for storing sponge supplies.
At the main square is where you will find some beautiful taverns and cafés, shops that sell everything from jewellery and sandals to ceramics and local sweets. And when you need to cool off, climb down the steps from the harbour into the crystal clear water for an unforgettable swim.
Getting there
The quickest way to get to Halki is a ferry ride from Rhodes; boats depart regularly from the port of Rhodes.

Greek summer is synonymous with a buzzing nightlife that starts late and lasts till the early hours of the morning. For those that enjoy staying out all night, listening to the latest tracks and dancing the night away- Greece in summer is sure to please; especially if you are in Mykonos or Athens Riviera, where local and international DJs have the crowds partying till sunrise.
Greece is officially welcoming international visitors for the Greek Summer Season 2021, as of today, Friday, May 14.
Domestic travel and lockdown restrictions have also eased, however, certain rules still apply.
Here is all you need to know!
International Travellers to Greece
Only international visitors that have filled out the Passenger Locator Form can travel to Greece. The submission of the Passenger Locator Form (PLF) by all passengers of international flights to Greece is compulsory. This rule applies to all travellers (including all children over 5 years old).
They are also required to have a vaccination certificate, a negative PCR test (performed less than 3 days) or a certificate stating they have recovered from the coronavirus.
Travelling by Plane and Ferry
All people in Greece (this includes residents and foreign visitors) will be allowed to travel to the Greek islands by plane or ferry with one of the following:
• a vaccination certificate (stating that 14 days have passed since full Covid- 19 vaccination.)
• a negative PCR test performed less than three days prior.
• a negative self-test taken 24 hours prior to travel.
• a negative rapid antigen test taken 24 hours prior to travel.
Please note, those who have recovered from Covid-19 can present a certificate issued two months after their recovery. And passengers who prefer to travel with a negative self-test must present the negative result before travelling, via self-testing.gov.gr.
Travelling Around Greece by Car
• Authorities are strongly recommending people take a Covid-19 self-test before travelling by car between mainland regions in Greece. This is optional and people travelling by vehicle will not be checked.
Lockdown Restrictions
Many lockdown restrictions in Greece are easing as of today, Friday, May 14.
They are as follows:
• Greece’s new curfew will begin at 12:30 am until 5 am.
• requesting permission for movement via SMS to 13033 and 13032 will no longer be required.
• restrictions on domestic travel between islands and regions have been lifted. However, rules are in place regarding travelling between islands by ferry and plane (please see above).
• retail stores will reopen with a rule of one customer per 25 square meters in stores.
• museums across the country will reopen on May 14.
• open-air cinemas will reopen as of May 21.
• outdoor live cultural events and shows in outdoor areas (all guests required to be seated) will begin on May 28.

After nearly six months of being shut, cafes and restaurants across Greece finally reopened their doors for sit-down service on Monday, May 3, a day after Greek Orthodox Easter.
As per the new rules, only open areas of restaurants and cafes will operate, until May 15, 2021. Distances between tables and seats are required, and no music is allowed on the premises.
Customers in restaurants and cafes are also strongly advised to wear their masks while seated and when they are not eating or drinking, however, this is not mandatory.
The nightly curfew has now changed to 11 p.m, with eateries allowed to remain open until 15 minutes before curfew (10:45 p.m).
Local residents will still need to use the SMS authorisation code for movement by sending an SMS (to 130 33). This will no longer be required after May 15, when international travel begins.
Authorities have also announced that organised beaches in Greece will reopen on May 15, when the country opens up to international tourists, as locals in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry slowly begin to prepare for summer season 2021.

Location
Set between two popular Greek islands, Naxos and Ios, this secluded isle keeps its traditional feel even in high season. Iraklia is a perfect base for island hopping, thanks to its proximity to the rest of the Small Cyclades including Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, Schoinoussa, Donousa, and Keros.
Getting there
Just 1.5 hours by local ferry, you can reach Iraklia from Naxos via Express Skopelitis (Monday – Saturday), or via Blue Star Ferries from Naxos or from Athens (3x per week). Iraklia is connected by ferry with Naxos and all the islands of the Small Cyclades group.
What you should know before you arrive
– There are no banks and there is only one ATM.
– A couple of mini-markets and one supermarket are located in the main area.
– There is no petrol station or car hire, there are only scooters for rent.
– No camping facilities available.
– There aren’t any buses or taxis, only a minibus that goes from Agios Georgios to the village of Panagia and to Tourkopigado beach.
– There’s no pharmacy on the island but there are two clinics and a doctor on call 24/7.
– Water and electricity are available for yachts at the port.
Things to do
Hiking: Iraklia is a mountainous destination and you can enjoy the view from different points of
the island. Iraklia has eight distinct hiking trails that are popular with nature lovers. Some of the best hikes are the trails leading to Profitis Ilias and to Merichas, where you can reach one of the most picturesque points of the island.
Snorkeling: Enjoy the fabulous underwater world as the island’s coasts are home to the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus and the marine turtle Caretta caretta.
Diving: Blessed with a rich marine life, Iraklia offers great opportunities for diving. Here you can spot the Mediterranean monk seals (mentioned above) and dolphins that frequent the island.
Bird watching: Bird lovers will be in paradise as this is where some rare species make their nest. Mericha Bay is the ideal spot as it’s surrounded by rocks 100m in height and between the cliffs you can see wild pigeons and vultures. Many people come to witness the rare and endangered species and birds.
Walking: This is the best way to get around and when the weather is right, strolling from one beach to the other or from the port to the main village is a wonderful thing to do, especially in the evening.
Things to see
Panagia Iraklia Village
-The village’s landmark is the 1919 stone-built Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary). The other big attraction is Pigi, a natural spring about 1km away that supplies water to the village. This refreshing spot also offers visitors great views of the northern part of Iraklia and all nearby Cycladic islands.
-A visit to Agios Athanassios is also a must. It’s an old village featuring stone houses built
according to traditional Cycladic architectural style and it offers a breathtaking view. The chapel of Agios Athanassios is at the entry point to the village.
-Located close to Iraklia, to the west of the island, near the bay of Vourkaria is the Cave of Saint John, which consists of a series of chambers with colourful decoration of massive stalagmites and columns in magical clusters of stalactites. The area covering the chambers is 2000 sq.m. and is considered one of the most impressive caves of the Aegean.
–The castle is located near Livadi beach, here you can find extensive information about the ancient settlement used as an offensive structure during the Hellenic period.
-From the top of Papas Hill, you can admire the magnificent view of all the adjacent islands including Ios, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Donousa, Ikaria, Makares, Koufonisia, Shinousa, Keros, Antikeri, Fidou, Agrilou, Amorgos, Anhydros, Anafi, Santorini, Venetiko, Avelonisia. You can also see most of the beautiful nearby beaches from here.
Villages
There are two villages on Iraklia: Agios Georgios, which also serves as the main port of the island, and Panagia, which is a mountainous village with fewer residents. Panagia is a small village with a few taverns and cafes. It stands out for its traditional architecture and the lovely churches around it. Agios Georgios is where the locals of Iraklia gather as its the largest settlement. Approaching the island from the sea, the white-washed homes with blue painted doors stand out from a distance. Here you will find a few taverns, a couple of mini-markets, and churches.
Beaches
As the island is totally untouched by tourism, most beaches are unorganised and remote, meaning most also offer privacy. Some beaches can be reached on foot, while others you can only get to by private boat. Livadi beach and the port beach are the most popular places to swim on the island. You can easily walk here from the harbour and it takes about 20 minutes. Livadi features soft sand, crystal clear water that is shallow, making it ideal for families with young children. Vorini Spilia, is also worth exploring, as it’s a quiet spot, perfect for a long, relaxing day of swimming. Karvounolakos in the south of the island is a small beach between Merichas and Alimia– the colour of the sea here is breathtaking.
Eat and drink
There are roughly 15 taverns on the island, most are in the main square and all serve authentic local dishes. Our favourite for a range of freshly made seafood pasta are Akathi, Thalassa, Pera Panta, make sure you also head to Syrma taverna which serves traditional Mediterranean and Greek cuisine and try the homemade rakomelo (raki with honey). To Gialiri taverna is great for a variety of mezzedes (tapas-style dishes), while the ouzeri-café-bar, To Ypovrichio is perfect for an ouzeri style setting. For a coffee or after-dinner drink head to En Lefko or Perasma. For brunch and all-day drinks head to Speires where they serve a rich collection of high-quality wines by small winemakers from all over Greece and Surfin Bird, is an all-day bar-restaurant located on the beautiful Livadi seafront, serving great food using regional produce and homemade sweets.

Local delicacies
Iraklian honey is famous for its golden coloured texture and unique taste because the bees here feed exclusively from thyme. Also try the wide variety of spoon-sweet preserves and marmalades made from various local fruits, as well as specialty liqueurs such as rakomelo and frangosyko (prickly pear). Cheese lovers will definitely enjoy the different types made from goat’s milk and produced on small scale by local farmers. As for a specific dish, Schinoussafava (chickpea puree) variety, is a specialty of the island.

Don’t expect 5-star luxury resorts, here it’s all about comfort, coziness, and good old-fashioned Greek hospitality. Most of the rooms are placed on the outskirts of the village towards Livadi (southeast of Agios Georgios).
