Greece is gearing up for what is expected to be an outstanding year in travel for the entire country.
The Greek Tourism Ministry is anticipating the sector will return to pre-pandemic levels in 2022, as officials are working closely with industry leaders to ensure it’s a record year across the board.
In 2019, over 33 million visitors arrived in Greece, up from 24 million in 2015, making it one of the most visited countries in Europe and the world.
And according to Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias, this year will see a booming comeback with new projects including upgrading important tourism infrastructure, setting up a crisis management task force, and new training programs for tourism professionals.
The Ministry also stressed the importance of highlighting Greece as a year-round destination, extending the tourism season, promoting lesser-known destinations, attracting higher-quality tourists, promoting cruise travel, attracting tourism investment, as well as focusing on sustainable tourism practices.
So far, the government has approved projects including upgrades to tourist ports, development of winter and mountain tourism, development of wellness and health tourism, training programs for tourism employees, agri-food and gastronomy tourism, diving and underwater tourism as well as making beaches more accessible to those with disabilities.
According to trade publication Travel Pulse, a recent survey by tour operators worldwide revealed key travel trends and top destinations for 2022, with Europe leading the way. Italy is currently ranking as the number one place of interest, Greece, and France tying second, and Ireland coming in at number three.
In another report just released by Greek tourism research group Tourix, Athens is also attracting more and more interest from the United States, Israel, and Cyprus.

Snowfall blanketed much of Greece on Monday, from Athens and Crete to Naxos and Santorini, as the country turned into a winter wonderland with layers of snow.
Greek islands covered in snow
A severe snowstorm disrupted road and air traffic Monday in the Greek capital of Athens while snow blanketed most of Greece, including Tinos, Naxos, Mykonos and Santorini as well Evia. And the Acropolis was covered in a layer of heavy snow on Tuesday as the Greek capital received its heaviest winter storm in 12 years. Ancient ruins around the city were covered in a coat of white snow, making for unique photoshoots of monuments across Athens.
The Greek government has also declared a holiday Tuesday in the greater Athens area, parts of central Greece and the islands to keep people safe. Only essential services including supermarkets, gas stations and pharmacies remain open.

The snow closed parts of Greece’s highways and temporarily stopped ferry service from Athens to the Greek islands. Flights to and from regional airports were also disrupted, Authorities urged the public to refrain from nonessential travel.
Greek carrier Aegean Airlines cancelled most flights on Monday and said it expected schedules to be disrupted on Tuesday and possibly Wednesday.
The cold weather is expected to stay in Greece until Wednesday, moving further south to the island of Crete.

If you do like your seafood (as we do) we recommend the octopus, shrimp, mussels and calamari, which pair perfectly with a side of fava (yellow split peas puree), tiganites patates (homemade fries) and a traditional Greek salad.
And if you plan on getting there in the evening, we suggest bringing a cardigan as it can get a little breezy, otherwise, you can also choose to eat on the terrace, which is also a nice option as the beautiful bay and castle are still in full view!

What to eat in Tinos
Local delicacies of Tinos
Louza: the Greek version of the Italian prosciutto. It’s made of fillet marinated in salt and then red wine, right before being smoked and spiced. After two months of drying, louza in slices.
Tsimpites: sweet cheese pies, stuffed with cheese, eggs, sugar, vanilla, mastic, and cinnamon.
Skordoloukanika: sausages made of pork meat, marinated with garlic and sweet wine for about 4 hours.
Furtalia: an omelet with eggs, cheese, milk, parsley, skordoloukanika or syglina, salt and pepper, fried in pork grease.
Xerotigana: a fried mixture of flour, water, lemon and oil, served with cinnamon, honey and sugar.
Local Cheeses: Tinos’ cheeses are well-known and exported outside the island. Try Tinos’ Graviera, Volaki, Sklavotyri or Marathouni, Kopanisti, soft cheese with a peppery flavor (a Protected Designation of Origin), Kariki (the blue cheese) and Petroma, and unsalted cheese.

Tinos Surfing Lessons: this is the most famous beach on the island. The boho paradise for surfers. In fact, it’s a large bay with two beaches, but the highlight is the first one. Here you will find a colourful van serving cocktails and umbrellas like giant mushrooms. The waves are usually huge but it’s a must-visit beach to experience either way, in my opinion (A: Kolymbithra beach)
Athmar Tinos: A name inspired by its place, as Tinos is an island filled with aromatic herbs- including thyme- this beautiful cafe is located in the heart of the square in the village of Platanos. Omma: One of the newest entries to the island’s bar scene- and located just a few kilometres from Tinos Chora- Omma serves delicious cocktails and offers breathtaking views! Domaine de Kalathas: Frenchman Jerome Charles Binda, a former designer and antique dealer from Paris fell in love with the Cyclades and settled with his family on the island of Tinos in 2011, where he began focusing on the extraordinary potential he sensed in the Tinian heritage grapes. There are no chemicals in the vine, no chemicals in the cellar, fermentations are spontaneous, and there are no added sulfites. Most of these vines are more than 150 years old, from varieties including native Aspro and Mavro Potamisi, Koumariano, G’durra (Kondoura or Tinian Mandilaria), and Rozaki. (A: Exomvourgo)
Volacus Wines: The organic vineyards of Volacus Wine are located around 14km from Tinos town. In the small yard at the front of the vineyard, under the shadow of a plane tree, there is always a table set with local delicacies and wine, waiting for visitors to taste. The vineyard is open for wine tasting from 1st of June until 10th of September, Wednesday to Sunday and the wines of Volacus are available in selected wine stores and restaurants. Ballis Winery Tinos: Explore this historic place in Arnados, where you get a guided tour in a 670-year-old traditional winery. Walkthrough the maze-like set of tunnels while the family owners get to share with you details about the cellar’s history and vinification process; before they continue the discussion on the cellar’s terrace with a glass of wine while visitors enjoy the overwhelming view. Tinos Food Paths Festival
Tinos Food Paths is a wonderful culinary festival that promotes local products and traditional recipes of the island. With several festivals taking place throughout the year (celebrating the finest Tinos has to offer) the main event takes place in May each year. Here you can watch chefs from all over Greece preparing unique dishes using some of Tinos’ most famous ingredients, including artichokes, potatoes, louza, honey, just to name a few. Organised by locals and ex-pats, this amazing food festival not only celebrates Tinian delicacies and dishes but also allows visitors to experience authentic traditions, culture, and the real lifestyle of locals.
Lufthansa has released its 2022 summer flight schedule, which offers an expanded portfolio of new European destinations, including direct flights from Munich to Kalamata, as well as new flights to the Greek islands of Samos and Skiathos.
Lufthansa’s summer flight schedule will launch on March 27, 2022 and the airline also announced frequency increases on current routes and the resumption of services. It will now serve over 160 destinations in Europe, with more destinations from its Frankfurt and Munich hub.
According to Lufthansa officials, the number of intra-European connections from Frankfurt and Munich will almost reach the 2019 level with around 5,000 weekly flights.
In Europe, Lufthansa is offering six new holiday destinations from Munich- Kalamata in the Peloponnese, Menorca island in Spain, Varna on the Black Sea, Billund in Denmark and Bergen in Norway are new destinations in northern Europe. Starting in April, Air Dolomiti will also fly from Brindisi in Italy.
Starting with the 2022 summer flight schedule, the company’s Eurowings Discover will also be taking off from Munich with a summer schedule that features 12 Greek islands with the addition of sunny Samos in the Northern Aegean and stunning Skiathos in the Sporades.

Porto Katsiki
No trip to Lefkada is complete without a swim at Porto Katsiki– and if you think the photos are filtered- no chance. Once you arrive, you’ll quickly realise that it’s even better in real life as this beach really is a slice of heaven. Striking white cliffs form a rusticly beautiful backdrop to the deep blue waters- creating one of the most spectacular landscapes in the world. Porto Katsiki can be reached by car, boat cruise, taxi boat, or private yacht and here you’ll find numerous sunbeds and umbrellas lined across the famous sandy beach; as well as a few shaded spots for a bit more privacy. At the top of the stairs, you’ll also discover a beach bar and small shops where you can grab some drinks, light snacks, sunscreen and other beach items.
Egremni
The natural beauty of Egremni has made it one of the most photographed places in Greece, with this long white sandy beach boasting crystal-clear waters and stunning surroundings. There is an organised section with sun loungers on one side and on the other, you’ll find plenty of quiet spots for some peace and privacy. Egremni is located 38 km southwest of Lefkada Town and can be reached by boat cruise or a private yacht.
Kathisma
This is by far one of the most stunning beaches of Lefkada, located 17 km southeast of the main town, Kathisma is one of the longest beaches on the island and features fine white sand and different shades of turquoise waters. The beach is surrounded by an idyllic mountain backdrop, which offers a feeling of total privacy. There’s also an organised section with sunbeds and umbrellas too.
Pefkoulia
This is a wonderful large sandy beach located 10 km southwest of Lefkada Town (close to the fishing village of Agios Nikitas). The waters at Pefkoulia Beach feature a wonderful turquoise colour and it’s loved by locals and international visitors alike, thanks to its natural beauty. Easily accessible by car, there are quite a few taverns nearby too.
Agiofili
Located about 40 km south of Lefkada Town, Agiofili is another brilliant beach in Lefkada, with crystal clear waters and white soft sand. Surrounded by white stone cliffs that create a beautiful setting; the best way to get here is by boat. Tip: during peak season make sure you arrive early to grab a spot, as it really does get packed throughout the day.
Ammousa
For a gorgeous little bay that’s perfect for the whole family, make your way to Ammousa, which is found 37 km from the town. Featuring green surroundings and the clearest waters, you can enjoy the entire day here swimming, sunbathing on one of the sunbeds, or making your way over to the bar or amazing little tavern for some incredible local summer dishes.
Megali Petra
This is by far a local favourite and for a good reason! Located 25 km west of Chora, Megali Petra (large rock) is partly organised with sunbeds and umbrellas scattered between the rocks. The rustic yet beautiful landscape of Megali Petra offers a wonderful feeling of peace and privacy.
Avali
Offering amazing natural scenery, surrounded by lush vegetation on the slopes of the mountains, Avali can be reached by car; and although the road that leads here is quite narrow, the effort really is worth the visit! Featuring a cool beach bar, here you can enjoy some nice local food and drinks, as you take in the incredible views of the beach.
Mylos
This hidden gem to the south of Agios Nikitas village is nowhere near as known as the other beaches making it appealing to those who enjoy privacy. Located 15 km southwest of Lefkada Town, it’s surrounded by striking green cliffs that offer a beautiful backdrop. It’s not an organised beach and has no facilities nearby, so make sure you come prepared with drinks, food, and a sun umbrella.
Vassiliki
Located on a picturesque fishing village 38 km southwest of Lefkada Town, Vasiliki Beach is famous for its windsurfing and sailing conditions. Offering endless water sports facilities, here you can swim all day or enjoy some kayaking, sailing and windsurfing.
Greek company REDS S.A. has been awarded the development of the former U.S. base in Gournes, Heraklion, Crete, for 40.2 million euros, the country’s privatizations agency announced.
The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF) said that the sale was conducted through the process of electronic auction and that the board will soon convene to ratify the e-auction result.
Dubbed the ‘Small Ellinikon”, after the development of the former Athens international airport, the asset is considered to be a key item in the country’s privatizations agenda.
The real estate property of Gournes consists of a beachfront land plot of 345,567 sqm located 13km from the airport “Nikos Kazantzakis” and 16 km from Heraklion. During the last 20 years, land plots neighboring the property have been developed, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, the Cretaquarium Thalassocosmos, the International Exhibition and Conference Centre of Crete, etc.
The tender, which follows years of delay, comes amid an emerging investment and building boom on Crete, the Mediterranean’s fifth-largest island.
Long one of Greece’s leading tourist destinations, Crete welcomes more than 5 million visitors a year and boasts several world-class tourist attractions like the Minoan era Knossos Palace, the legendary site of King Minos, and the Minotaur. Over the last two years, foreign investors have engaged in a number of deals and resort projects on the island.
In 2020, Hines acquired five hotels on Crete and Russia-based developer Mirum began work on its long-awaited Elounda Hills resort project in the summer. U.S. investment fund Blackstone recently acquired the Elounda Blu hotel in Crete – its sixth hotel property in Greece – through its Spanish subsidiary Hotel Investment Partners.
At the same time, the Greek government is investing billions of euros to upgrade Crete’s transport and power infrastructure. Work has recently begun on a new 1.5 billion euro international airport in Kastelli — located about 20 kilometers from Gournes – and is expected to be in operation by the end of 2023.
Also, underway is a 2 billion euro highway project stretching along the north coast of Crete, said to be one of the largest public works projects in Europe.
