Character and Style

Facilities

This small and exclusive retreat accommodates up to 10 guests in five nicely decorated and inviting rooms. Four hours of daily yoga takes place on an open-air platform with panoramic views of the mountains and the Aegean Sea. Between classes, guests relax on the sunbeds at Jetti Beach, take a stroll to the lighthouse, or head to the meditation platform, to make the most of every moment.

Eco-friendly

Locally produced 100% natural and biodegradable toiletries are provided to guests, and water is recycled for watering the gardens. There is also an organic olive farm, and all waste is recycled.

The Church

There is a small church close to the main house on the island. The patron saints of the church are Cosmas and Damian, who were venerated as Unmercenary Physicians- making it symbolic as Silver Island is all about healing physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Regardless of religion, many guests come here to pray and take time to experience the serenity and peace at this spiritual spot.

Rooms

The island’s accommodation consists of two beautifully renovated, traditional whitewashed, blue houses – the main house, and the villa. There are 5 twin rooms, and one single occupancy room, with space for only 10 guests per retreat, make this an intimate and very personal experience. The rooms are a mix of traditional decor and contemporary design. Every room is different and features a fireplace, artwork, a private terrace, and views of the sea.

Adventurous travellers– With kayaks, SUPs, and a Pedalo available, guests can explore the shores of the island, and might even meet a dolphin or two along the way! There are also pathways for exploring the island.

Food and Drinks

To embrace a healthy lifestyle all meals are vegetarian, consisting of pure, simple, natural foods that are inspired by the Mediterranean diet. All produce is seasonal, organic, and locally sourced. Here you will be served sun-ripened fruit and vegetables which are prepared with love (and their own extra virgin olive oil) resulting in mouthwatering and delicious dishes. The three meals a day are served at an outdoor table or in the sheltered dining area (depending on the weather), both overlooking the Aegean Sea. Fresh coffee, a variety of teas, and local organic vegan wines are also served at dinner.

Services

Yoga courses normally run from April to October, or you can also choose to attend one-week retreats with various teachers coming from around the world. The day starts at dawn with two hours of yoga and ends with two hours of sunset yoga and can include meditation and other therapies. There’s also a meditation platform to watch the sunrise from, as well as kayaks and a restored 1970s pedalo if you would like to cruise around the islet.

Cruising the Historical Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal, which separates the Peloponnese from mainland Greece, is one of the oldest and most striking manmade canals in the world; not to mention a very important navigational route that connects the Corinthian Gulf with the Saronic Gulf.

This narrow canal where the Peloponnese begins was a key strategic and trading point in
ancient times that linked the Ionian and Aegean seas. The canal’s position in fact separates the peninsula of the Peloponnese – converting it into an island – from the Greek mainland. And, while the famous canal is quite narrow, it’s a vital lifeline for ships wanting to enter the Aegean Sea.

History of the Corinth Canal

Named after the Greek city of Corinth, the Canal has steep limestone walls that soar about 300 feet from the water level to the top of the Canal but is only 70 feet wide at sea level. Ships must be narrower than 58 feet wide to transit the Canal. This small size was appropriate when the Canal was built in the late 19^th century, but it is way too small for today’s cargo and passenger ships.

Facts About the Corinth Canal

Spanning a distance of 6.3 kilometres, the canal helps ships save a journey of 185 nautical miles. Before the construction of the canal, ships passing through this
area had to endure a circuitous and a roundabout route in order to enter even the Mediterranean and the Black Seas in addition to the Aegean Sea.

Construction of the Corinth Canal

After centuries of attempts to create the canal, the Roman Emperor Nero made the first effort in 67 AD but the canal was actually completed by French engineers in 1893. The first documented ruler to propose a canal was Periander in the 7th century BC. He eventually abandoned the canal plan but built a portage road, named the Diolkos or stone carriageway. This road had ramps on either end and boats were pulled from one side of the isthmus to the other. The remains of the Diolkos can still be seen today next to the Canal.

Crossing the Bridge

If you have your own car you can cross the bridge on the way to Corinth from Athens, take the exit with a sign that says “Tourist Exit” and drive over the canal to the other side. Visitors can stop and park next to the Isthmia ‘sinking’ bridge on the old National Highway, which links the Peloponnese with Athens. There are a couple of taverns close by, where you can sit and enjoy a coffee or late lunch. From here you will see the bridge submerging under the water, and then reappearing again once the vessel has sailed by.

Visiting the Corinth Canal

This dramatic gorge is one of Corinth’s most visited spots and if you’re after an adrenalin rush, you can even bungee jump down it. The canal mostly sees the presence of small vessels, cruise ships, and yachts, as it has become one of the major tourist destinations in the country, enabling visitors to take short trips through the canal. In today’s world of mega-ships, the Corinth Canal is primarily used by small cruise ships and tour boats.

Cruising Through the Corinth Canal

Visitors have a few options to see the Corinth Canal up close. Cruise lines with small ships transit the canal on eastern Mediterranean itineraries. Otherwise, several private companies depart from Piraeus, the port of Athens, and offer a cruise through the canal. Many cruise ships from Athens also offer a half-day excursion to the Corinth Canal; guests board buses in Piraeus for a 75-minute drive to the Corinth Canal. From there, a local tour boat takes visitors through the canal. These tours offer plenty of chances to see the canal from the top edge to the water level.

Greece Confirms it Will Be Open to Travellers for Summer 2021

Greece has announced the country will be welcoming tourists for summer 2021, as it plans to reopen to fully vaccinated international visitors as of mid-May.

During an interview with CNN on Wednesday March 17, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis confirmed that Greece has “all the necessary protocols in place to ensure that they will get the full Greek experience without any real compromises. If we did it last year, we will certainly do it much better this year as we have additional tools at our disposal,” Mitsotakis said.

Referring to the European Commission’s official proposal on establishing a “Digital Green Certificate” to facilitate travel in Europe, the Greek PM added that the safety of tourists is of top priority and only tourists who have proof they have been vaccinated, have antibodies, or test negative for COVID-19 will be admitted.

Last week Greece’s Tourism Minister Harry Theoharis said its official welcome date was May 14 and to help prepare the country for visitors, employees in the tourism industry would be prioritised for COVID-19 vaccines after the country’s vulnerable populations.

“People who are vaccinated, have tested negative or recovered from the disease, and have antibodies are welcome to Greece and we will welcome them irrespective of any agreements,” Theoharis told Reuters.

In 2019, Greece recorded around 31.3 million international visitors to the country and officials are now looking ahead to summer, hoping to have half the tourists they did before the pandemic hit.

A gorgeous suite occupies the ground floor that opens out into the azure waters of the Mediterranean. A bathing ladder leads you to your own private infinity pool where you can swim in the stunning turquoise Mediterranean Sea.

Exploring the Splendid Archeron River

The Acheron River, set 25km from Parga, is a local gem that supplies the entire area with refreshing H2O. With abundant vegetation and crystal clear water, it’s surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape.

Location

Its springs are located in Ioannina, on the mount Tomaros, at an altitude of 1600 m. The river runs through Preveza and Thesprotia and flows into the Ionian Sea, to the village of Ammoudia. The springs of the Acheron River are an area of outstanding natural beauty are close to the villages of Kanalaki and Glyki.

Getting there

The best way is by car and the area is easily accessible through motorways. From the village of Gliki, you can follow the road signs for “Acheron Springs.” If you haven’t hired a car, you can book a trip with a local travel agent and visit with a tour group.

History

Apart from the natural beauty, the springs of Acheron are known worldwide for their mythological contents. In Ancient Greek mythology, Acheron was one of the five rivers of the Greek underworld. According to tradition, Zeus was devastated when the Titans drank from the water, and the ancient Olympian god of the sky condemned the river to remain eternally under the earth while its water became darker.

What you will find here

In many parts of the river where the water flow is normal, there are lakes and water pits that are home to a range of amphibians and fish. In other locations, the river flows through steep and high cliffs. In the rocky side slopes of Acheron, there are many birds of prey that nest in the forest slopes of the canyon.

Acheron River is worth the visit for its magnificent transparent water and
the surrounding rocky landscape. It should definitely be on the list when visiting Parga or any of its nearby areas, as it retains its unspoiled natural beauty and secret energy. Exploring the flows from the mountains of Souli Epirus until it reaches the Ionian Sea in Ammoudia Beach is a memorable experience.

Just a few km away from the sea, there is a forest with exotic-looking plants growing in the water. Panagia Kakaviotissa, Limnos

This “roofless” church, sits on top of a cave in which it’s nestled, in a crag on Mt Kakavos, 4 kilometers from Myrina. The church dates back at least to 1305 when it became a branch of the Great Lavra Monastery of Mount Athos.

Agios Stefanos, Syros

According to tradition, the church of Agios Stefanos was built by a fisherman named Stephanos from the nearby village of Galissa, who was threatened by a huge octopus that was pulling him to the sea. He made a vow to Agios Stephanos to save him and so he built the chapel in this secluded crag in his honour.

Panagia tou Charou, Leipsoi

This church is located on the hillside southeast of the capital of Leipsoi, a small island located south of Samos. It is home to the only icon in which the Virgin Mary is not holding Jesus Christ as a child, but rather after his crucifixion.

Kyra Panagia, Karpathos

The church stands out for its red dome and is located on the southeastern side of the island. It was built in traditional style with whitewashed walls and features a small terrace that offers amazing views of the Aegean Sea and to the bay of Kyra Panagia.

Iraklia is a tiny island with only 115 residents. But don’t let that fool you. What it lacks in size it makes up for in unspoiled beauty, rich history, scenic beaches, and authenticity; allowing visitors to discover what Greek island life is all about.

If you are looking to escape the city over summer and searching for a destination that is especially quiet, even during the peak tourist season, Iraklia is an ideal spot that offers peace and tranquility. One of Greece’s best-kept secrets, it’s the largest island of the Small Cyclades and here you can switch off, relax and allow yourself to be captured by its simple beauty.

Location

Set between two popular Greek islands, Naxos and Ios, this secluded isle keeps its traditional feel even in high season. Iraklia is a perfect base for island hopping, thanks to its proximity to the rest of the Small Cyclades including Ano Koufonisi, Kato Koufonisi, Schoinoussa, Donousa, and Keros.

Getting there

Just 1.5 hours by local ferry, you can reach Iraklia from Naxos via Express Skopelitis (Monday – Saturday), or via Blue Star Ferries from Naxos or from Athens (3x per week). Iraklia is connected by ferry with Naxos and all the islands of the Small Cyclades group.

What you should know before you arrive

– There are no banks and there is only one ATM.

– A couple of mini-markets and one supermarket are located in the main area.

– There is no petrol station or car hire, there are only scooters for rent.

– No camping facilities available.

– There aren’t any buses or taxis, only a minibus that goes from Agios Georgios to the village of Panagia and to Tourkopigado beach.

– There’s no pharmacy on the island but there are two clinics and a doctor on call 24/7.

– Water and electricity are available for yachts at the port.

Things to do

Hiking: Iraklia is a mountainous destination and you can enjoy the view from different points of

the island. Iraklia has eight distinct hiking trails that are popular with nature lovers. Some of the best hikes are the trails leading to Profitis Ilias and to Merichas, where you can reach one of the most picturesque points of the island.

Snorkeling: Enjoy the fabulous underwater world as the island’s coasts are home to the Mediterranean seal Monachus monachus and the marine turtle Caretta caretta.

Diving: Blessed with a rich marine life, Iraklia offers great opportunities for diving. Here you can spot the Mediterranean monk seals (mentioned above) and dolphins that frequent the island.

Bird watching: Bird lovers will be in paradise as this is where some rare species make their nest. Mericha Bay is the ideal spot as it’s surrounded by rocks 100m in height and between the cliffs you can see wild pigeons and vultures. Many people come to witness the rare and endangered species and birds.

Walking: This is the best way to get around and when the weather is right, strolling from one beach to the other or from the port to the main village is a wonderful thing to do, especially in the evening.

-The village’s landmark is the 1919 stone-built Church of Panagia (Virgin Mary). The other big attraction is Pigi, a natural spring about 1km away that supplies water to the village. This refreshing spot also offers visitors great views of the northern part of Iraklia and all nearby Cycladic islands.

-A visit to Agios Athanassios is also a must. It’s an old village featuring stone houses built

according to traditional Cycladic architectural style and it offers a breathtaking view. The chapel of Agios Athanassios is at the entry point to the village.

-Located close to Iraklia, to the west of the island, near the bay of Vourkaria is the Cave of Saint John, which consists of a series of chambers with colourful decoration of massive stalagmites and columns in magical clusters of stalactites. The area covering the chambers is 2000 sq.m. and is considered one of the most impressive caves of the Aegean.

–The castle is located near Livadi beach, here you can find extensive information about the ancient settlement used as an offensive structure during the Hellenic period.

-From the top of Papas Hill, you can admire the magnificent view of all the adjacent islands including Ios, Paros, Antiparos, Naxos, Donousa, Ikaria, Makares, Koufonisia, Shinousa, Keros, Antikeri, Fidou, Agrilou, Amorgos, Anhydros, Anafi, Santorini, Venetiko, Avelonisia. You can also see most of the beautiful nearby beaches from here.

Villages

There are two villages on Iraklia: Agios Georgios, which also serves as the main port of the island, and Panagia, which is a mountainous village with fewer residents. Panagia is a small village with a few taverns and cafes. It stands out for its traditional architecture and the lovely churches around it. Agios Georgios is where the locals of Iraklia gather as its the largest settlement. Approaching the island from the sea, the white-washed homes with blue painted doors stand out from a distance. Here you will find a few taverns, a couple of mini-markets, and churches.

Beaches

As the island is totally untouched by tourism, most beaches are unorganised and remote, meaning most also offer privacy. Some beaches can be reached on foot, while others you can only get to by private boat. Livadi beach and the port beach are the most popular places to swim on the island. You can easily walk here from the harbour and it takes about 20 minutes. Livadi features soft sand, crystal clear water that is shallow, making it ideal for families with young children. Vorini Spilia, is also worth exploring, as it’s a quiet spot, perfect for a long, relaxing day of swimming. Karvounolakos in the south of the island is a small beach between Merichas and Alimia– the colour of the sea here is breathtaking.

Eat and drink

There are roughly 15 taverns on the island, most are in the main square and all serve authentic local dishes. Our favourite for a range of freshly made seafood pasta are Akathi, Thalassa, Pera Panta, make sure you also head to Syrma taverna which serves traditional Mediterranean and Greek cuisine and try the homemade rakomelo (raki with honey). To Gialiri taverna is great for a variety of mezzedes (tapas-style dishes), while the ouzeri-café-bar, To Ypovrichio is perfect for an ouzeri style setting. For a coffee or after-dinner drink head to En Lefko or Perasma. For brunch and all-day drinks head to Speires where they serve a rich collection of high-quality wines by small winemakers from all over Greece and Surfin Bird, is an all-day bar-restaurant located on the beautiful Livadi seafront, serving great food using regional produce and homemade sweets.

Local delicacies

Iraklian honey is famous for its golden coloured texture and unique taste because the bees here feed exclusively from thyme. Also try the wide variety of spoon-sweet preserves and marmalades made from various local fruits, as well as specialty liqueurs such as rakomelo and frangosyko (prickly pear). Cheese lovers will definitely enjoy the different types made from goat’s milk and produced on small scale by local farmers. As for a specific dish, Schinoussa fava (chickpea puree) variety, is a specialty of the island.

Where to Stay

Don’t expect 5-star luxury resorts, here it’s all about comfort, coziness, and good old-fashioned Greek hospitality. Most of the rooms are placed on the outskirts of the village towards Livadi (southeast of Agios Georgios).
