Cook For Ukraine Dinner in Andros

In light of the devastating events currently occurring in Ukraine, Mèlisses in Andros has decided to donate 100 percent of proceeds from their pop-up dinner gathering on Saturday, May 28th, 2022 to support the #CookForUkraine movement, created to support the current humanitarian crisis faced in Ukraine.

Since this movement’s inception, hundreds of people from different backgrounds including top chefs, award-winning food writers, restaurant owners and home cooks have cooked and shared Ukrainian dishes at restaurants, gatherings and over the internet and through doing so are raising awareness and funds. Donations are being directed to UNICEF UK’s Ukraine appeal in support of families in Ukraine who have been displaced by the Russian invasion.

“Our team at Mèlisses is eager to join forces by becoming ambassadors and hosting a gathering in support of Ukraine from which 100% of proceeds will be donated to this movement,” announced the team.

Mèlisses has created a series of dinners that will highlight Andros and its producers and reflect seasonally available ingredients.

These gatherings take place in unique settings around this beautiful and diverse island, whether in the neoclassical home of a shipowner, on a sandy seaside beach, or in a secluded olive grove. The location of each dinner will not be disclosed until one day before the event.

8 Day Intimate Cruise Around Unexplored Greek Islands

Greek family-owned and based in Athens, Variety Cruises, the world’s largest small ships cruise line, has created a new 8-day itinerary for 2022 that will take a small group of guests around some of the most beautiful unexplored Greek islands.

With a focus on boutique travel and off-the-beaten-track itineraries, this unique Unexplored Greek Islands cruise is designed to allow guests to discover unknown gems with rich history, incomparable light, translucent water, and heavenly beaches.

From the 1st of July through to the 16th of September 2022, Variety Cruises’ Callisto ship will set sail for ten stunning Greek island destinations. Departing from the port of Piraeus in Athens, it will head straight to Cape Sounion, for sunset cocktails and a welcome dinner under the ancient Greek temple of Poseidon.

“This cruise offers a more nourishing side of Greece, a taste of true Greek culture. These are places where people take pride in offering hospitality – in line with the ancient custom of filoxenia, love of strangers – and where things are done with meraki, love and soul. A cruise voyage unraveling the most authentic Cycladic and Dodecanese islands of Greece,” says the team at Variety Cruises, who are there to help each guest experience a great getaway that caters to personal taste and preferences.

With only 34 guests on board, the intimate cruise ship then arrives at the island of Ikaria, one of the world’s famous Blue Zones. Once the ship docks, guests are guided as to where they can explore authentic villages, hikes in wild landscapes, or a dip in one of the eight natural thermal springs. For something less adventurous, they can take part in cooking classes or have a coffee with some of the friendly locals.

Each day travellers are able to discover a new port of call, a hidden cove with crystal blue waters, a glimpse of ancient history, a rich cultural diversity; with the next stop being the tranquil island of Patmos, home of the Grotto and Monastery of Saint John the Apocalypse. In the afternoon there is another stop off at the hidden island of Lipsi, before finishing the tour of the Dodecanese in Kalymnos– a destination filled with fresh flavours, rich cuisine and history.

With plenty of time for independent exploration, there are many opportunities to jump off the vessel’s platform straight into the Mediterranean Sea for a swim, snorkel or a kayak in a secluded beach or cove. This is especially magical as the ship sails towards the famous Cyclades, where guests are whisked off to private bays that can only be reached by small ships. Guests will be able to experience the authentic beauty of Amorgos, before a stop off at Koufonisia and Iraklia– which feature the most stunning waters.

Serifos island is the last destination on this trip, highlighting the Cyclades’ brilliant light, and steadfast traditions. Enjoy one last swim at one of the island’s remote beaches before heading for the final stop at the port of Piraeus.

Greece’s Most Sought-After Homemade Marmalades

People from all over the country and the world arrive in Naxos each year to visit Melimilon, home to Greece’s most sought-after homemade marmalades.

Local Evangelia Lianopoulou has spent the last few years introducing authentic Naxian flavours to thousands of people from all over the world through her delightful creations including homemade jams, marmalades, spoon sweets, and liqueurs, which are all made from locally sourced produce.

“My passion has always been to give people a true and authentic Naxian experience. I try and use as many local products and Cycladic flavours for people to taste,” Evangelia tells IN+SIGHTS GREECE.

Ancient Greeks referred to marmalade as Melimilon, which is the name Evangelia chose for her thriving family business that now includes her famous range of homemade products, an all-day cafe and this year they also opened a concept store in the heart of town, where people can purchase an even wider range of Melimilon products.

Evangelia’s creations include her apple and plum marmalade, prickly pear jam, and sweet potato jam; as well as a special tomato and onion marmalade- and if you are lucky you may be able to get your hands on limited edition beetroot, zucchini or pumpkin flavours.

“I try to use ingredients that give people more opportunity to try a different range of flavours, aromas and tastes of Greece and more specifically from our beautiful Cycladic islands,” she says.

Evangelia reveals it was her grandmother’s cooking that inspired her to launch her products, as her grandparents’ garden was always full of fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs, all organic “with the most wonderful taste. I had to create something special and allow others to taste the wholesome goodness.”

After seeing the instant love people had for her homemade jams, Evangelia decided it was time to expand and she opened up a cafe, where visitors had a chance to try the marmalades before they purchased them. From its inviting courtyard setting to its chic old-style interior, which is filled with Melimilon products, the light and breezy cafe has quickly become a favourite breakfast spot on the island.

The enticing menu includes free-range eggs made in a variety of ways, tiganites (Greek-style pancakes) topped with local cheese and Melimilon’s marmalades; cheese and spinach pies served with homemade spiced preserves, as well as freshly baked sweets and a range of coffees and juices.

Melimilon’s success has seen it expand once again and this year they opened a charming store located in the island’s old town, where people can purchase a range of homemade jams, honey, liqueurs, spices, herbs, and other local goods they can take home.

What makes Melimilon so special is that it allows visitors to experience an old-world charm, when Greece’s life had a slower pace, and locals from the island gathered food from their garden and shared it with family and friends. This is what Evangelia now wants to share with the rest of the world.

Discover history

According to Greek mythology, it was said to have derived its name from a son of Minos. Little is known about the ancient history of Folegandros. Its inhabitants were Dorians. Later it came under Athenian rule.

The island was conquered in 1207 by the Venetian Marco Sanudo and remained under the rule of Venice until 1566 when it was taken by the Ottoman Turks. The Greeks reclaimed it in the 19th century.

Must visit villages – Folegandros has three small villages, Karavostasis (where the port is located), Chora, Ano Meria, and the small settlement of Agali with the homonymous beach.

Festivals/ Local Traditions

During summer there are three major festivals (Panigiria):

-27th of July, Saint Panteleimon Feast Day.

-6th of August, Feast of the Transfiguration of the Savior.

-15th of August is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Dekapendavgoustos).

Do as locals do…

Wander around town

Visit the “Kafepantopoleio tis Irinis” at Ano Meria, a tiny little restaurant inside a grocery store. And taste excellent homemade food by ‘Kyria Eirini’. It’s the only taverna that runs all year long, so it’s also a local favourite.

Insider tips…

For an alternative experience of eco-tourism and complete peace of mind, just 5 minutes walk from Agali, you can find the quiet and picturesque Galyfos beach. For the last 25 years here, there have been rooms available at Galyfos, that operate without electricity. Simple and beautiful- they overlook the sea.

Ideal time to spend here? I would recommend at least four days and perhaps as long as a full week.

Favourite part of the island? Kastro, the oldest and most picturesque neighbourhood of Folegandros. In fact, it’s a castle built during the Medieval Ages to protect the town from pirate attacks. Today, there are Cycladic houses inside the walls, whitewashed alleys, and staircases with bougainvillea.

What to avoid? If you like to stay by the beach, don’t choose Chora. Stay at Agali. On the contrary, if you want to be in the spotlight, choose Chora.
