Visiting Athens’ Stunning Lake Vouliagmeni

This natural spa lake with fresh spring and seawater is a spot where the water is warm in summer and winter, making it a popular spot year-long. We suggest you give yourself an unforgettable all-day experience at Lake Vouliagmeni, in the idyllic setting of the Athenian Riviera, half an hour away from Athens city centre.

History of Lake Vouliagmeni

These natural hot springs with labyrinthine underwater caves were formed in what was, in prehistoric times, a huge cave. The imposing rock, thermal waters, the labyrinthine underwater tunnels and the lush vegetation now create a unique geological phenomenon. The lake’s present form was created after the roof of the cave fell due to erosion caused by the high temperature of the running water. The lake has now been declared a natural monument and belongs to the pan-European network of protected Natura 2000 areas.

Swim at the Lake

The stunning emerald waters remain at a temperature between 20 and 29 degrees Celsius all year round. Embraced by red rocks, the lake water gushes from springs 50 to 100 metres deep and is constantly being renewed both by the thermal springs and the sea.

Natural Pedicure

Here you can also have a natural pedicure as the sea is full of Garra rufa fish—also known as the Dr. Fish that nibble off dead skin. The indigenous and natural inhabitant of the Lake, the small Fish Spa, allows visitors one of a kind peeling experience as the fish take on the task of relieving the skin of its dead cells while offering a relaxing massage treatment.

Healing Properties

At the edge of the Lake, near the rocks, you will find a labyrinth underwater cave. Among the 14 tunnels which make up the cave, there is one reaching 800 metres in length, one of the longest in the world and there is also a huge stalagmite in the cave.

Seaworld

The aquatic paradise of Vouliagmeni Lake is home to many beautiful living organisms. Among them, a kind of sea anemone called Paranemonia Vouliagmeniensis stands out, as well as species of sponges and mollusks that portray the perfect balance of the lake’s ecosystem.

Eat at Lake Vouliagmeni

After your refreshing swim in this magical setting make your way over to the local all-day cafe/restaurant and have a leisurely late bite at Nero, which serves coffee, and sweets, as well as a delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner menu.

Eateries Reopen in Greece, Organised Beaches Next

After nearly six months of being shut, cafes and restaurants across Greece finally reopened their doors for sit-down service on Monday, May 3, a day after Greek Orthodox Easter.

As per the new rules, only open areas of restaurants and cafes will operate, until May 15, 2021. Distances between tables and seats are required, and no music is allowed on the premises.

Customers in restaurants and cafes are also strongly advised to wear their masks while seated and when they are not eating or drinking, however, this is not mandatory.

The nightly curfew has now changed to 11 p.m, with eateries allowed to remain open until 15 minutes before curfew (10:45 p.m).

Local residents will still need to use the SMS authorisation code for movement by sending an SMS (to 130 33). This will no longer be required after May 15, when international travel begins.

Authorities have also announced that organised beaches in Greece will reopen on May 15, when the country opens up to international tourists, as locals in the food, beverage, and hospitality industry slowly begin to prepare for summer season 2021.

Highlights of Metsovo

Nestled within the Pindos mountain range at an altitude of 1,200m, the charming town of Metsovo is set at the ‘crossroads’ of Epirus, Thessaly, and Western Macedonia.

Built like an amphitheatre, it boasts a collection of traditional houses with tile roofs and wooden porches, as well as grand mansions that are nestled between lush greenery. The town flourished in the 18th and 19th Centuries and ever since was supported by a local
benefactor and politician Evangelos Averoff, who created a foundation to fund local crafts, cheesemaking, and winemaking. Indeed, Metsovo is known as a capital place to find excellent cheese in all varieties, the most famed of all from the region being the smoky, toffee-coloured PDO Metsovone.

Top Things To Do

-Explore the town – stroll along cobblestone streets and sip coffee in Agia Paraskevi square, admire the traditional architecture and visit the Averoff Museum, Aghios Nikolaos Monastery, and the Folk Art Museum.

-In early spring or late Autumn especially visit the man-made Aoos Springs Lake.

-Southeast of that is the high Katara Pass (5km northeast of Metsovo) where you can challenge yourself in a climb or hike and admire stunning vistas.

Best Places To Eat

-Visit Galaxias, which serves good regional cuisine and is located in the main square of Metsovo. We recommend you try the homemade pites (pies), traditional kontosouvli, as well as handmade local pasta.

To Koutouki Tou Nikola serves simple yet delicious local fare, from meats and mezedes to grilled saganaki cheeses and hand-cut chips in a cozy ambiance.

-No-frills in terms of its appearance, Aspasia’s (20 minutes from Metsovo) honey cuisine has character and packs a punch in flavour. Local meats, cheeses, and wines are served up in well-sized and affordable portions.

Don’t leave Metsovo without trying: Agiorgitiko wine at the Averoff Winery and Hotel, and cheeses such as gyalotyri, Metsovone, graviera, and goat’s cheese. Hard cheeses travel well and can be bought at I Pygi or the Tositsa Foundation Cheese Factory.

Authentic Handmade Pasta in the Heart of Mykonos

Located in the heart of ‘the chora’, and open since 1978, this three-storey traditional Italian restaurant in Mykonos serves an authentic range of handmade pasta and pizza.

Being one of the first Italian restaurants to open on this popular Cycladic island, and standing on the main alley of Barkia, the owner’s secret recipes originate from a variety of regions in Italy. During the summer months, Pasta Fresca Barkia is packed with local and international visitors who come to try the variety of pizza options and numerous pasta dishes made with fresh ingredients; some of the most sought-after dishes are the linguini with crab meat, stuffed ravioli, and tortel- lacci.

Opened by Anagiros Griparis in 1978, it was the first Italian restaurant in Mykonos to introduce live demonstrations of fresh handmade pasta and has now become one of the most popular casual spots in town, as it offers a relaxed dining experience for local and foreign guests.

Insights Greece - Authentic Handmade Pasta in the Heart of Mykonos

Anargiros was influenced by his mother’s cooking flair and her culinary knowledge, which she passed down to him from a young age. Determined to do something with it, Anargiros left his career as an engineer on cruise ships and inspired by his countless trips to Italy, he entered the hospitality industry; bringing authentic Italian cooking techniques and flavours to Mykonos.

Since 1978, Anargiros has maintained the original aesthetics of the restaurant, which used to be a former three-story home; each level has its own unique feel, offering customers a cozy atmosphere as they enjoy a lunch or dinner with friends.

Here you have the opportunity not only to taste fresh, handmade pasta but also to watch the chefs make it from scratch, as every afternoon in front of crowds, the chefs display their insider tricks of the pizzeria on the ground floor; which has become a daily attraction of passers-by; from gnocchi, ravioli, tortellini, and lasagne sheets, to fettuccine, fideo and fusilli, there is a huge range to choose from.

With tables inside and out, it’s a great spot to enjoy your favourite pasta dish, followed by a traditional Italian dessert.

From a very early age, Teo developed his fine tastes and quickly learned to appreciate fresh, organic, ingredients, and was taught how to preserve and of course, cook with them. It came as no surprise that his ambition was to become a chef and credits his early childhood and major influence from his father, for his major culinary success.

Personalized menus, seafood/oyster events, BBQ parties, private cooking lessons, or even live cooking demonstrations on a private beach; there is no gastronomic experience Teo and his staff won’t do.

One of the most popular services that Teo provides is an unforgettable, live and authentic Greek cooking experience at Rhenia, an inhabitant island next to Delos, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

How to get there & around

Volos lies about 330km north of Athens and 210km south of Thessaloniki. Buses connect Volos to both cities as well as many other destinations. Volos also has an international airport and is also connected to many European cities including direct flights from London and Amsterdam.

Once in Volos, you can get to most or all of the places we include in this itinerary by means of public transport. However, keep in mind that buses don’t run frequently on all routes so this could mess up your schedule big time. The best way to explore Volos is by car.
