While the city’s iconic bars remain worth revisiting, there’s a new generation of spots making their mark on the capital’s ever-evolving drinking scene. From experimental spritzerias to low-key natural wine joints and late-night listening bars, these new arrivals are giving locals and visitors a fresh reason to stay out a little longer.

Our edit of the best new bars in Athens brings together the standout newcomers you need to know.

Hotel Éternité

Tucked on a buzzy Kypseli corner, Hotel Éternité is an all-day bar that brings a touch of old-world charm to this creatively charged neighbourhood. Featuring a warm, retro-theatrical interior and vinyl-spun soundtrack, the cocktails lean into aperitivo territory, while the food, by chef Marianna Boykou, channels Greek roots with a New York twist. Think elevated comfort bites like tartare, ceviche, and hot dogs worth dressing up for. The vinyls lining the wall? You’re encouraged to pick your own.

Subject of Athens

Brought to life by the masterminds behind Abstract Athens, Subject of Athens is a bar that defies convention. Located just above Kotzia Square, this ambitious venue unfolds across three distinct spaces, each offering its own vibe. On the ground floor, the main Subject bar serves up creative takes on classic cocktails, with twists that surprise at every sip. Upstairs, Informal is a shape-shifting space where mixology meets culinary artistry. And below, the yet-to-be-revealed EgoDeath promises something entirely unexpected. Whether you’re sipping an 888 Martini, savouring French cheese, or simply soaking in the eclectic ambiance, Subject of Athens redefines what a night out in the city can be.

Okupa

Hidden in plain sight, Okupa is where Athens’ sound and flavour scenes collide. Part vinyl haven (courtesy of Bottarga Records), part listening bar, it’s where you sip a sharp Manhattan while crate-digging for rare grooves. Mornings are all brunch and botanicals, but by night, it shifts into something moodier- dim lights, beef cheek croquettes, and a soft-shell crab burger with just enough heat. The crowd’s as curated as the playlist, the wine list leans natural, and the cocktails are dialled in. It’s not just a bar- it’s a lifestyle with a soundtrack.

A: Psaromiligkou 9, Athens

Koumkan

More than just a hotel bar, Koumkan is a refined hideaway in upscale Kifisia, channelling the intrigue and elegance of the world’s most iconic members-only lounges. Created by Ari Vezené, Koumkan strikes a balance between old-school cocktail culture and a modern sensibility- designed for both quiet moments and lively encounters. The decadent menu spans from Peruvian anticuchos and truffle-laced rigatoni to a standout Chateaubriand, while cocktails like the Avant-Gardea bold mix of tequila, mezcal, yuzu and coriander, offer inventive takes with a global twist. This is where elevated dining and drinking meet a sense of understated exclusivity.

Bar Amore

A fresh breeze has blown through Neos Kosmos in the form of Bar Amore, where Italian spritz culture meets Mediterranean flair. This spritzeria, with a playful Greek twist, celebrates the art of aperitivo with a menu bursting with flavour. Think local olives, lasagne, Burrata Pugliese, and a rotating selection of carefully chosen Greek wines, from sparkling gems to delightful retsinas. Spritzes are the star here, with Aperol, Campari, and Cynar making frequent appearances, alongside Negronis and Garibaldis for those looking to elevate the evening.

A: Menechmou 1-3, Neos Kosmos

Gonia

Tucked into the core of Exarcheia, Gonia is a bar and café with a story to tell. Set in a 1930s building, it blends vintage character with the raw energy of the neighbourhood, creating a space where past and present naturally intersect. This bar is more than just a place to drink; it’s a gallery of materials and design objects that blur the line between art and function. With its underground gallery and curated displays of ceramics, tiles, and marbles, Gonia is as much about creative inspiration as it is about the perfect pour. It’s a space where you can sip on a Martini while picking out a terrazzo slab for your next home project.

A: Psaron 45, Athens

Di Lien

Sleek and social, Di Lien is one of those places that feels like it’s been there forever, but it hasn’t. A window between the bar and kitchen lets the energy flow freely, while sidewalk tables spill onto the street, perfect for catching the afro-beats, funk, and soul that pulse into the early hours. The Paloma is a house favourite (and rightly so), but there’s also a smart selection of Greek craft beers and low-intervention wines for those who like their drinks with a story. By day, things take a softer turn with a curated brunch menu- steak sliders with biodynamic wine, anyone?

A: Stournari 43, Athens

Steez

Located on the bustling pedestrian street of Themistokleous, Steez is Exarcheia’s latest cocktail haven, blending urban cool with a keen focus on sustainability. This new bar offers an innovative twist on classics, crafted with seasonal homemade ingredients and a commitment to sustainability. The bar menu is inventive without being fussy- flavour-led, well-balanced, and in tune with the pace of this edgy neighbourhood. And with a soundtrack that shifts from soulful to eclectic, Steez nails the balance between casual and cool.

A: Themistokleous 84, Athens

Fellos

A recent standout in Athens’ wine scene, Fellos adds a minimalist touch to the city’s vibrant bar culture. Housed in a former textiles store, the space offers a carefully curated selection of Greek and international wines, showcasing some of Greece and Cyprus’ finest drops. With around 40 wines, plus spritzes and cocktails, Fellos is a destination for both locals and visitors eager to explore new pairings, especially with the great meze dishes. Whether you’re enjoying a laid-back evening at one of the sidewalk tables or indulging in their thoughtfully crafted menu, Fellos provides a cozy and stylish setting to savour something special.

Kennedy Vins

This new listening bar offers a refined yet welcoming space for wine lovers, specialising in beautiful French wines that are hard to come by. Drawing on inspirations from the owners’ global travels, the venue blends French and Japanese influences, adding an eclectic edge to Athens’ evolving wine scene. Kennedy Vins pairs its exceptional pours with carefully considered bites- think freshly sliced Iberico pancetta, Torres truffle crisps with Jamon Iberico, and other delicacies that elevate the moment. It’s all about nuance, detail, and a distinct sense of place in every glass.

Wine is Fine

Nestled on Athens’ Vissis pedestrian street, Wine is Fine is a French-inspired wine bar, bordering on restaurant, that has quickly become a hotspot for food and wine enthusiasts alike. With an interesting contrast of simple street-side ambience and elegant white-clothed table settings, Wine is Fine offers up French-inspired dishes like tartare de boeuf (10€) and bottarga pasta (13€) on what is an ever-changing, seasonal menu. The wine selection at Wine is Fine focuses on organic and natural wines, including orange and pet-nat varieties from Greece, Europe and beyond. Here, the focus is on quality and consistency, while attentive staff are on hand to suggest pairings and manage what is usually a rather long waitlist (insider tip: head on over closer to opening time and you’ll nab a table quickly).

Gamay

Aptly named after the grape variety which cheekily plays on the Greek language (you’ll have to ask a trusted local), this small wine bar sits on an unassuming corner in Exarcheia. Patrons spill onto the footpath, while inside, the space exudes warmth, with stools lining the bar and the wall. The wine menu boasts a diverse selection of by-the-glass offerings, priced between 6-9€ and categorised by Greek wines and “strangers” hailing from Italy, France, Spain, Argentina, and beyond. Complimenting the wines are a range of wine-friendly snacks, including Jamon (9€), Pinsa (9€), Burrata with pesto and hazelnuts (6€), and an intriguing pastitsio-inspired tartar (12€). With its charming setting and enticing menu, this cozy wine bar promises a pleasant evening out, any day of the week.

Drink With the Locals at This Newly Opened Athens Neighbourhood Bar

In a city filled with all-day cafes, Eprepe Bar is a welcome addition to the inner-city neighbourhood of Kypseli.

The low down… Tired of ordering your cocktail, only to have it accompanied by nuts or chips? So too were the group behind this new bar in Kypseli, located on the pedestrian street of Agias Zonis. At Eprepe, zero waste is a key philosophy and you’ll often see the same raw ingredients included in their cocktails and bar food. Seasonality also plays a role from the food and the preparations for their cocktail list right down to their wine cellar.

Décor/ Ambience: The space is modern yet comfortable, with countertops, cushioned high chairs and a side bar that opens almost completely, so that the neighbourhood becomes part of the interior. The feeling is familiar and comfortable, yet has a definite bar vibe to it and a rotation of DJs throughout the week.

Something to drink: There is a handsome selection of natural wines, and a range of harder-to-find spirits. Classic cocktails like the negroni and dry martini sit alongside signature cocktails like the house spritz made from pet nat wine, bitters and soda.

Menu: The small bites on the menu are perfect for sharing over a glass of natural wine. Bites are all made in-house from scratch and include house-made focaccia, grilled cauliflower served on carrot and ginger puree, and an aromatic chickpea dish served with sesame crackers. All drinks are accompanied by off-menu bites like fried gigantes beans, parmesan cookies and even handmade chocolate truffles.

Order my fave dish: The menu is seasonal, but if you come across the tartaki (small tarts filled with pea cream and topped with asparagus), it’s a must-try. These small morsels are fresh, fragrant and packed with flavour.

Price range: Bar food ranges from 3-7 euro and cocktails average out at 9 euro.

Clientele: Young, hip locals of Kypseli (and surrounding neighbourhoods). Great for catching up with one or two friends or unwinding with an after work drink.

Location: Agias Zonis 1, Athens

Opening hours/days: Closed Mondays. Open from 2 pm-2 am (Sundays 1-8pm).

Best Things to Do in Kifissia

Many of my childhood and teenage years were spent living in the northern suburb of Kifissia, which has expanded and seen several changeovers in shops and restaurants throughout the decades yet still remains pretty much the same.

As it was popular among Athenian gentry during the 18th and 19th Centuries as a cool summer from the city heat, Kifissia was bequeathed with some beautiful – or at least interesting or unique – neoclassical architecture. Its Alsos park, which leads directly from the train station (green line) to the main square, where when I arrived in 1982 was where ‘the cop in the can’ stood directing traffic, is still great for a nice stroll, with its large round fishpond, a café and a scattering of park benches (but no playground).

Insights Greece - Best Things to Do in Kifissia
Athens’ famous Northern neighbourhood

The temperature in Kifissia is thought to be around 4-5 degrees C lower than that of the city centre, largely owed to the greenery in the area, Syngrou park nearby and Mt Parnitha not far above. Although I moved to Athens in my early 20s and was happy to escape what I felt was a dull, sleepy suburb, today I relish the relaxed energy, fresh clean air, greenery and small(er)-town community vibes. As school kids, we went to the shopping centre for slush puppies and rollerskating (so 80s!) and walked freely and safely around at night after going to Chloe or Boboniera outdoor cinemas (both still there) in summer. Small yet pleasant Kefalari park (just a 15-minute uphill walk from Kifissia) was where the wild things went to skull down beers, kiss and throw each other into the pond.

Today, Kifissia still has low-profile energy when it comes to both day and night outings, but there are plenty more places to hang out for lunch, coffee, dinner and drinks, as well as more options for culture lovers and shopaholics. Like Kolonaki in central Athens, Kifissia’s shopping scene is generally for those willing to spend freely, but there are more reasonable and high-quality choices available too.

Galerie Lefakis on Tatoiou

There aren’t many museums in Kifissia, but the one there is, the Goulandris Natural History Museum (Levidou 13 & Othonos) is special, as it presents a cornucopia of plant and animal species, fossils and the replica of a giant dinosaur skeleton. It also has a café and shop. Art lovers will enjoy a visit to the Kouvoutsakis Art Institute next door (Levidou 11) where over 1,500 paintings and sculptures that date back to the 1800s are showcased. Culture vultures should also visit Mamush Gallery (Panagitsas 3), which hosts a private collection of 500 works including originals by Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Victor Vasarely, Keith Haring, and Pablo Picasso as well as internationally known Greek artists like Pavlos, Gaitis and Galerie Lefakis (Tatoiou 73) and Mihalarias Art.

Strolling Around the Neoclassical Zappeion Hall

One of Athens’ most striking buildings is the neoclassical Zappeion Hall, the first building in the world constructed in honour of the modern Olympic Games.

Zappeion Hall

Designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen and completed in 1888, its construction was funded by the national benefactor, Evangelos Zappas. Since its opening, Zappeion has been linked with numerous significant moments in Greece’s history. In the past few years, some of the country’s most significant events have taken place here- including European summits, political conferences, as well as art exhibitions, fashion shows and other artistic and musical performances.

Located in the centre of Athens, the Zappeion Hall is surrounded by the Greek Parliament building and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Right next to it is the National Gardens and, opposite, on the side of the Ardittos Hill, the Panathenaic Stadium; Hadrian’s Arch and the ancient Temple of the Olympian Zeus.

The surrounding area of Zappeion is adorned with a multitude of statues, reflecting upon Greece’s modern history and at the main entrance are the statues of the two Zappas cousins, who funded the construction of the building; as well as a charming park, where locals go for a walk. Across Zappeion Hall there is Aigli, a nice café serving homemade pizza and club sandwiches as well as Aperol Spritz, salads and wines. Right next door is an open-air movie theatre of the same name, which is also loved by Athenians – especially during summer.

When visiting also make sure to check out the archaeological site of the Roman Baths built at the end of the 3rd century AD- they are located within the Zappeion grounds on Vassilissis Amalias Avenue. The site was discovered during excavations for the construction of the Athens Metro and has been made accessible to the public since 2004.

Zappeion’s gardens are surrounded by the streets Irodou Attikou, Vasileos Konstantinou, Vasilissis Olgas, and Vasilissis Amalias and the National Gardens feature charming lawns, atriums, patios, flower beds and charming orange trees that are also lovely to see.

New Dining Scene Explodes in Athens

The restaurant scene of Athens has been exciting and alluring for several decades and following a few years of lockdown has now become even more so. Here we present you with some of the most talked-about new arrivals in the capital’s dining scene.

CTC

Alexandros Tsiotini’s innovative culinary concept has moved from the greater Hilton area and Dioharous Street to the spot where Athiri restaurant used to be. His new space is more impressive and with a lovely garden. As for the cuisine, it follows the chef’s vision with a stronger element of Greekness and a special emphasis on raw materials.

Linou Soubaris & Sia

One of the newest hits of the Athenian culinary scene, this restaurant has already become a hit for combining a minimalist décor, candle-lit dining area in Psirri with cuisine that is delightfully simple yet extremely delicious.

Soil

One of the most heard-about openings of last autumn was Soil, a fine dining restaurant created by Tasos Mantis (known from his Michelin-star awarded work at Hytra restaurant) and Alexandros Mouridis. Located in a vibrant part of Pagrati near the Panathenaic Stadium, chef Mantis’ famous garden in Alepochori fully inspires the restaurant’s dishes.

Brutus Tavern

This new venture by the team of Yannis Morakis, Giorgos Melissaris and Giorgos Kanellopoulos is based in the space that used to house the old Nikkei restaurant. It’s a premium steakhouse with an expertly designed wine list by sommelier Michalis Theodorakis. The cuts definitely have the upper hand but be sure to try the burgers with dry-aged minced meat, Red Leicester cheddar and caramelized onions as well as the Royal Chicken with truffle and Albufera sauce.

Loco

From the first day it opened, this cool taqueria by Lelo Georgopoulos, Athenagoras Kostakos and the team of Kuko’s went viral and not only because of its catchy name. In these colourful and fun interiors or at one of the tables on the sidewalk, try its well-made, Mexico-inspired cocktails, tacos, mouth-watering sea bream ceviche with hot yellow pepper sauce and a beef tartare with hot pepper sauce.

Kitschen

One of the most unexpected, tastebud-tickling and feel-good arrivals of last autumn was this Asian restaurant/dim sum bar in Piraeus, in one of its most underdeveloped areas. A breath away from the commercial centre of the port and on a street you probably wouldn’t expect to visit, Kitschen has been set up by Dimitris Liem (with stints at Matsuhisa, Momo and e&o among others) and Spyros Mineto (9Beta). The former has taken over the kitchen, with his deep expertise and a focus on top quality raw materials and high flavour; the latter has set up a drinks section with scrumptious signature cocktails such as Chino Latino, Samurai’s Sling and Cobra Kai.

The Black Salami Microbakery

Foodie Instagrammers know this is currently one of the hottest spots in Athens. It’s not quite a restaurant, but we felt it important to include it in this list. It is described as a micro-bakery (due to limited bread production) and presents one of the most delectable brunch options (top of the line are the Eggs Benedict and Greek kayanas scrambled eggs) as well as great sandwiches with fluffy breads.

Mimis

Part of a dining triptych, this ‘neo-traditional’ souvlaki restaurant in Pagrati opened during a lockdown last March. Mimis is the latest venture of Elvi Dimitris Zympas, who also runs the excellent Alficon and Elvis kalamaki bar, in a new experiment with something he really loves.

Bistrot at Mira Me Athens

With a philosophy of ‘come as a guest, leave as a friend’ this new, ground-floor restaurant is run by executive chef Aris Roussos, who presents his own take on Greek and Mediterranean cuisine, with some Asian twists.

Drakoulis Dry & Raw

The luxury steakhouse returns to the capital’s gastronomic scene with a new venue in Kifissia. Its ambition is to become the hottest new ‘meating’ point in the northern suburbs. Stratos Drakoulis puts his signature on the varied menu of this place, which opened very recently.

Hasapika

Why did it take so long to think of this? Hasapika is a sushi restaurant inside the Varvakeio fish market on Athinas St. Try the Nigiri, sashimi, rolls and Greek-style fish soup, in an environment that could easily have sprung from an Anthony Bourdain show.
