Greece Among Top Destinations in the World for Hotel Investors

Greece is among the top destinations for investment funds and companies active in the hotel industry and in general in the field of hospitality and tourism. In fact, leading representatives of international brands revealed their intention to increase their presence in the Greek market while speaking at the 22nd Prodexpo conference held in Athens.

On the occasion of the Melia group’s recent agreement with the hotels of the Papakaliatis family, the Zeus Hotels group, Maria Zarraluqui, Global development VP, Meliá Hotels International, stated that in Greece not only are opportunities identified, but the right partners, with knowledge and experience in providing high-quality services, are on offer.

According to Zarraluqui, the Meliá Group expects a further recovery of the hotel and tourism industry in Greece, adding that there are plans for expansion in Mykonos, Thessaloniki and Santorini. Greece is among the top markets seen by foreign investors, along with Spain and Portugal. The challenge for the Greek market is the gradual detachment from tour operators and their replacement by new sales methods, with digitization as the main tool.

On his part, Ian Di Tullio, and Chief Commercial Officer Southern Europe Accor, predicted further development of the Greek tourism market, with the hotel industry transforming and passing from the level of overnight to the level of service and upgraded experience. Given these trends and the national strategic framework for growth, Greece 2.0, Di Tulio said that Accor is going to strengthen its footprint in Greece by 50% in the coming years.

The importance of upgraded and quality consulting services to enhance the inflow of foreign investment in the Greek hotel market was referred to by Nikos Hantzos, Consultant, International Hotel Development – Greece & Cyprus Marriott Intl. Taking as an example the recent Marriott agreement in Greece, he presented how crucial it is to converge and transform into a strategic investment the presence of five institutional investors, an international hotel manager, Domus, and an international brand like Marriott. Therefore, for Hantzo, experienced and capable executives of the hotel sector who can play the role of advisor to investors, are a “key” for new and more investments in this sector in Greece.

Thomas Doxiadis Founder doxiadis + Architects shared on the panel his experiences from the importance of designing big brands in Greece. Indicatively, he referred to the Four Seasons, which operates by international standards. However, as he explained, in addition to the standard guidelines, current design trends place great emphasis on the issue of “in-depth” quality of the overall experience offered by a hotel.

*Maria Zarraluqui, Global development VP, Meliá Hotels International: “We plan further expansion in Greece.”

*Ian Di Tullio, Chief Commercial Officer Southern Europe Accor: “We will increase our presence in the Greek market by 50% in the coming years.”

*Nikos Hantzos, PhD, Consultant, International Hotel Development – Greece & Cyprus Marriott Intl: “It is important to find the right consultants and partners for new investments in the hotel sector.”

*Thomas Doxiadis, Founder doxiadis + Architects: “Architecture now enters the design of brands based on quality.”

Neoclassical Mansion Turns into a Boutique Hotel in Symi

Symi has a picture-perfect port with neoclassical buildings that testify to its glorious past. This image overwhelmed us from the moment we stepped foot on the island.

Little did we know that over the next few days we were about to visit a 19th Century listed neoclassical mansion with a great story behind it.

This 19th Century red building, known as the Mastoridis Mansion is right on the seafront, set on the opposite side of the port. We met with the architect Dimitris Zografos, who decided to restore the property and convert it into a boutique hotel, under the name “1900 Hotel”. He told us all about it. Beginning with Mastoridis, the person who brought the first autonomous diving suit (“scafandro” in Greek) over to Greece and Symi.

It was given to him as a present from the British in 1862, as at the time he was working as a captain in the West Indies. The plot of the story thickens as it was actually his wife, a woman back in 1862, that had the courage and will to try it on for the first time in front of all the men, who were reluctant to do so at the time. This was historically the year that marked the economic climb and flourishes of Symi island and it was this incident itself that changed the economy of the Dodecanese Islands.

Fast forward to 1960, the house was constantly rented out to a French painter until it was abandoned and left to collapse. Dimitris Zografos, a lover of neoclassical buildings, realised that this was an architectural gem and tried, through careful and thoughtful restoration, to keep its heritage alive and allow its guests to experience a modern version of its rich history.

The house has been left merely intact. The imposing staircase when you pass through the front door, the impressive high painted ceilings with details that take your breath away, and the vintage elements- are all beautifully matched with the charming ambiance of the building. The main rooms of the house have been seamlessly transformed into four elegant suites (1901, 1902, 1903, and 1904), steeped in history.

On the entry-level, a courtyard surrounded by lush greenery frames the blue of the Aegean Sea. As you pass through the main entrance, on the same floor you can see the suites named 1901 and 1902. The top floor consists of two more suites, 1903 and 1904, and the most amazing terrace overlooking the colourful harbour. An honesty bar is located on the top of the staircase; once the corner where musicians played and accompanied family and friends lounging on the terrace.

1901 is the grand suite on the right, that overlooks the harbour. It used to be the two main rooms of the mansion (“saloni” and “sala”). A real jewel of the past. The ceiling (which was fully restored) is a masterpiece painted by highly skilled artists of the time, featuring Eros, the God of love.

1902 is the old kitchen, now transformed into a bedroom with beautiful elements kept intact, such as the old fireplace, built-in closet, shelves, and niches. The en-suite bathroom, with a vaulted ceiling and amazing vintage cement tiles, is built against a rock that is partially exposed and filled with plants to give the feeling of showering in nature (with a view.)

1903 is a room (also a bedroom back then) privileged with three large windows. Filled with light and offering amazing views of the harbour and open sea, which guests can also cherish from its private area on the top floor veranda. An en-suite bathroom with a surprisingly brilliant shower hid in a spacious closet, compliments the perfect atmosphere.

1904 was the mansion’s main bedroom, offering privacy and views of the port. It has an en-suite bathroom with a vaulted ceiling and the geometrical patterns in the shower formed by vintage cement tiles create a highly aesthetic composition.

Being inside this historical mansion made us feel the heavenly allure of a bygone era, a feeling that is not easily forgotten.

Top 10 Things to do in Lindos

The picturesque town of Lindos, with its archaeological ruins, magnificent beaches and incredible views from the castle, is a place that deserves a visit when making your way over to Rhodes!

Lindos is one of the most stunning archaeological sites in all of Greece. The views from up top are breathtaking and the town itself features picturesque cobblestone alleyways that lead to a range of shops and eateries in a charming setting.

Here are the Top 10 Things to do in Lindos

1. Walk up to the Ancient Acropolis

Insights Greece - Top 10 Things to do in Lindos
Stroll through the alleys

The ancient Acropolis of Lindos is one of the most popular sites of antiquity. This beautiful blend of ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and medieval architecture is set on a majestic hilltop and is home to a 115m-high Acropolis dedicated to the goddess Athena. Built during the Bronze Age (4th Century BC), as well as a castle from the Crusader era, The Acropolis is certainly worth a visit but we recommend you can get there early in the morning to avoid the heat and the crowds.

2. Wonder Through the Town

The town of Lindos is really pretty and when visiting, it’s a wonderful idea to walk through the picturesque cobblestone alleyways that lead you to a range of shops where you can pick up some locally made products. Built on a slope, the town during summer is filled with local and international visitors shopping or buying gifts, including decorative plates and other ceramics made by local artisans.  You can easily get lost within the narrow streets ordering handmade gelato, picking up a Freddo Cappuccino from one of the many cafes, and finding plenty of beautiful stores that sell lovely jewellery and sandals. We recommend starting in the main town square and strolling slowly through to St Paul’s Bay (do this in the late afternoon).

3. Admire the Unique Architecture

Featuring narrow, pebble-stone streets (with lovely mosaic designs), Lindos has its own unique look. The houses of Lindos stand out with their traditional architecture and design. As you walk through the village you will come across an array of white-washed villas with entrances that lead into gorgeous bougainvillea-filled courtyards. Lindos is also renowned for its black-and-white pebble mosaic flooring, and artfully designed patterns that create a special charm.

4. Swim at St Paul’s Bay

Insights Greece - Top 10 Things to do in Lindos
Spend a day at St. Pauls Bay

This picturesque beach in Lindos is located on the southeast coast of Rhodes. St Paul is said to have stayed here in 51 AD and a small church has been built in his honour. The bay is both shallow and protected from winds, making it ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Sunbeds and cabanas are available and waiters walk by taking orders. On the beach menu, you will find a list of cocktails, beers, wines, juices, as well as light snacks, salads, and burgers. If you prefer table seating, Tambakio Restaurant is set on the edge of the water and open for lunch between 12 noon – 4 pm, and later on for dinner.

5. Explore the Ancient Theatre

This ancient amphitheater dates back to the 4th century BC and boasts a grand stage and orchestra as well as capacity for around 1800 spectators and was often used for musical shows and athletic competitions. The site is located just 10 minutes from the central square in Lindos and is free to visit.

6. Visit the Church of Panagia

The Church of Panagia is a holy Greek Orthodox chapel located right in the heart of Lindos town. It was originally built around 1300 but has been restored several times over the centuries, most recently during the Italian occupation (1927). The church still features much of its original Byzantine-style architecture. Its most famous feature is the high-rise, stone bell tower, a typical feature of churches around Rhodes island. Inside you will find  19th-century frescoes and icons depicting Holy Saints and Panagia (Virgin Mary). The Church of Panagia also has a small museum next door and on August 15, there is a huge Feast Day held here.

7. Catch the Sunset from a Rooftop

Insights Greece - Top 10 Things to do in Lindos
Rooftop at Cesar’s Meze Bar

Lindos has so many amazing rooftop bars, restaurants, and cafes with stunning views over the whitewashed villas and the Acropolis. One of the best things to do is to get here just before sunset (after a long day at the beach) and order a glass of your favourite drink, while soaking in the breathtaking views as the sun is setting. With so many to choose from, we recommend checking out Cesar Meze Bar; an award-winning restaurant and bar that also has a rooftop pool and seating with magical views of the entire town. Also try Cozze Champagne Bar and Restaurant, which serves lush cocktails, and also add Rainbird Bar and Dreams Cocktail Bar to your list- no matter which one you choose, you won’t be disappointed!

8. Enjoy Fabulous Seafood With Incredible Views

Lindos has a good range of seafood and fresh fish on offer, so make sure you indulge in the prawns, octopus, sardines, as well as other local dishes that Rhodes’ is renowned for; including Dolmadakia, which are called “Giaprakia” here, and freshly made pies (pies). Sit at one of the picturesque side-street restaurants or seafront tavernas and soak in the atmosphere. Some of the best rooftop restaurants include Melenos, Stefany’s, and Timis. Also check out Mavrikos (for great local dishes), Broccolino (for good Italian), and Blue Fin (for amazing modern cuisine). Also add Byzantino, Ktima, Palestra, Olive Street, and Alex’s Beachfront Restaurant to your list of places to try. For breakfast, we recommend Village Cafe, for homemade lemonade or coffee go to Captain’s House, and for gelato or other sweets head to Gelo Blu.

9. Climb to the Top of the Hill

Make sure you wake up early and climb to the top of the hill. If you venture north of the beach, go for a long walk until you get up top and explore the impressive views of the Acropolis and white buildings of Lindos from afar.

10. Stay in Style

Casita Casita

If you are travelling without kids and looking for a special place to stay, we recommend Caesars Gardens; an adults-only resort that’s only a stone-throw away from the vibrant village. Also check out the boutique hotel Melenos Lindos Exclusive Suites, which features 17th-century Lindian architecture.

Halkidiki offers many paths for mountain biking and hiking walks around the peninsulas on woodland tracks and along coastal pathways. The forests of Mount Holomontas in the centre of Halkidiki are the perfect escape destination for travellers who want to explore nature,  including hiking trails, horseback riding, or hit the many mountain biking trails of Olympiada on Athos.

2. Explore a charming fishing village

Nea Fokea, a picturesque little harbour busy with fishing and sailing boats, offers beautiful views from its seaside promenade and an amazing sandy beach. Boasting a range of cafes and taverns on the seaside, it’s a charming spot with traditional narrow streets and home to some very important historical monuments, including the Byzantine-era Saint Paul’s Tower and Saint Paul’s Cathedral.

3. Visit a historic site

Arnea is a place that features Halkidiki’s traditional past blending in nicely with its modern-day vibe. The Ministry of Culture has declared Arnea a historic site because of its rich history and its important examples of traditional Macedonian architecture. Make sure to visit the Historic-Folklore Museum of Arnea, which is housed in the historic mansion known as the “Yiatradiko”. Also check out the old village school dated back to 1872, the small church of Agia Paraskevi, the church dedicated to Agios Stefanos and in Arnea you can learn about old-time crafts such as weaving.

4. Get up close to Petralona Cave

Named one of the most stunning caves in all of Europe, Petralona features stalactites that sparkle in the dark. What’s even more special is that hidden among the stalagmites, is a 700,000-year-old skull of an early human (Archanthrapus) that has been discovered. Aged 30-35 years, he was considered elderly for that time.

In the village, you’ll find the Alsos of Aristotle, a park with a compass, pendulum and prism, highlighting Aristotle’s work that has become famous worldwide.

6. Travel to Nikiti

Stroll through the narrow paved alleys and admire the beautiful stone villas with their charming courtyards filled and blossoming flowers. Visit one of the many agricultural farms where you can take part in a cooking class and learn to prepare local dishes using fresh local produce. Halkidiki is famous for its olives, high-quality olive oil, artisan bread and gourmet cheeses, as well as for its traditional sweets and pastries. Whether in a traditional tavern, a local bakery or a gourmet restaurant, make sure to try as much of the local cuisine as you can. One of the best places to staple local delicacies is on the village of Arnea, famous for its honey, jams, wine, and tsipouro (as are most of the villages in Halkidiki).

9. Become a beekeeper for the day

The region is also well known for producing honey of the highest quality and if you want to experience something different head to the Mountain Holomontas in the centre of Halkidiki, where a friendly beekeeping family welcomes and invites you to visit their place, up to the mountain.
