The Greek capital has great beach spots within a relatively quick drive from the city, that make you feel as if you have just arrived on an island. Here, we’ve put together five of our favourites – where you’ll be tempted to spend the entire day.

Astir Beach
This prestigious private beach resort located in Vouliagmeni, has always been a regular haunt for celebrities (we are talking Bridget Bardot, Jackie Onassis, and Frank Sinatra), and who could blame them?

1. Pristine waters to dip into, plus fine, soft sand to walk along as you lap up the luxurious surroundings.

Varkiza
Conveniently located just 25 kilometres from the city, this affluent neighbourhood is home to Yabanaki Beach, Coyoacan Playa, as well as Athens Riviera’s landmark Island Club!

1. You’ll get to hang with locals and catch fishermen in their little wooden boats making their way across to the nearby open-air fish market.
2. Perfect spot to jet ski, join a game of beach volleyball, or practice yoga by the sea.
3. Relax with a cocktail in hand or enjoy a professional massage while listening to international DJs playing summer tracks.

Sounio
About an hour’s drive from the city (absolutely worth every minute) this is a picture-perfect place to spend an entire day at! Not only is it a top beach destination, but also home to the historic Temple of Poseidon.

1. Dive into clear blue waters as you take in views of the Temple.
2. In between swims enjoy brunch or a long, lazy lunch at one of the nearby taverns.
3. Stay to catch the magical sunset, which will undoubtedly be a memorable experience.

Anavyssos
Located close to Cape Sounio, Anavyssos is slowly becoming a new hot spot amongst Athenians who are leaving their inner-city life behind to call this seaside town home.

1. Clean and shallow waters make the beaches around here perfect for those with young kids.
2. Just drop your towel down on the sand- no need to hire a sunbed, as there are both organised and non-organised sections.
3. Order a Freddo or club sandwich from one of the cafes/ beach bars- or walk across to one of the nearby restaurants for sit-down dining.
